Shillong: The Congress party, which is engaged in the assembly elections of five states, has suffered a major setback in the northeastern state of Meghalaya. On Tuesday, five party MLAs joined the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance. After which the Congress has completely cleared the state assembly.
It is to be known that there has been a ruckus in the Meghalaya Congress for the last one year. Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the House Mukul Sangma had joined the Trinamool Congress in November along with 11 MLAs.
In their letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the five MLAs said, “We the undersigned MLAs of the Indian National Congress have decided to join the MDA government today on 8 February 2022. We want to support you and the MDA to strengthen the hands of governments and make decisions. In the interest of our people, we will take the state forward together.”
The letter was signed by Congress Legislature Party leader Amparin Lyngdoh, MLAs PT Sockmi, Myrlborn Siem, KS Marabaniang and Mohendro Rapsang. A copy of the letter has also been sent to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Congress won 21 seats
Congress had won 21 out of 59 seats in the 2018 Rajya Sabha elections. At the same time, the National People’s Party of former Union Minister Mukul Sangma became the second largest party by winning 20 seats.
