Dehradun: Political movements are intensifying in Uttarakhand before the upcoming elections (Uttarakhand Elections 2022). On Saturday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that if the BJP comes to power again, a committee will be formed soon after taking oath and will prepare a draft Uniform Civil Code. He said, the scope of this Uniform Civil Code should be uniform law on matters like marriage, divorce, real estate and succession for all citizens, irrespective of their religion.
Announcing this here on the last day of campaigning for all 70 assembly seats in the state on February 14, senior BJP leader Dhami said that after preparing this draft, there will be a common law for all citizens. Whatever religion they believe in. Dhami said that the committee to draft the Uniform Civil Code in the state would include jurists, retirees and people from the intelligentsia of the society as well as stakeholders.

He said that the purview of this Uniform Civil Code would cover matters like marriage, divorce, real estate and succession. Dhami said, “This Uniform Civil Code will be an important step towards fulfilling the dreams of the makers of the Constitution and will give embodiment of the spirit of the Constitution. It will also be an effective step in the direction of Article 44 of the Indian Constitution which lays down the concept of Uniform Civil Code for all citizens of the country.

He said that the Supreme Court has not only insisted on its implementation from time to time, but has also expressed its displeasure over not taking steps in this direction.
