ChandigarhPunjab Chief Minister and Congress candidate Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday requested the people of his assembly constituency Chamkaur Sahib to prepare for the state assembly elections to be held on February 20. Make them victorious by a margin of at least 50,000 votes during the voting.
A few days before Channi’s statement, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had claimed that Channi was losing from Chamkaur Sahib seat. Channi filed his nomination papers from Chamkaur Sahib seat (SC) in Rupnagar district. After this, addressing the public meeting, he said, “You have to make me victorious by a margin of 50,000 votes.” During this, his family was also present with him.
“If we (from Chamkaur Sahib) win by a margin of less than 50,000 votes, it will not be a victory,” he said, urging people to cooperate with him wholeheartedly in the upcoming elections. Channi took a dig at his political opponents, accusing them of joining hands to suppress the voice of the people of Chamkaur Sahib. “They can raid as many times as they want,” said the fifty-eight-year-old leader. You can register as many fake FIRs as you want… Whatever happens, the people of Chamkaur Sahib are with me.”

Channi, a three-time MLA, said, “I am your son and your brother. I have been with you for 15 years and have not gone away from you for a single day. I am nothing without you.” He urged the voters to support him from this constituency in this election. The Enforcement Directorate had recently seized Rs 10 crore in cash, out of which Rs 8 crore was seized from premises belonging to a relative of Channi, during its ongoing anti-money laundering probe against illegal sand mining in Punjab. .
Channi has denied any connection with him in the matter. He has accused his political rivals of “running scandalous campaigns and spreading propaganda” against him. Channi has been representing Chamkaur Sahib Legislative Assembly since 2007. He had won the 2017 election by a margin of 12,308 votes. Channi had also filed his nomination papers from Bhadaur (reserved) seat in Barnala district on Monday. Channi is the first Chief Minister of Punjab, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste community.
