Australia to Lift Travel Ban For its Citizens: Australia has announced the lifting of the ban imposed on its citizens returning from COVID-affected India by next Saturday. On this day, the first aircraft will land in Darwin. This information was given by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Friday. For the first time in history, the Australian government had banned the return of those citizens who were either in India or living there for the last 14 days.
Along with this, the government had threatened that if anyone tried to come back, he would have to pay a fine of 66,000 Australian dollars and could be imprisoned for five years. The government was criticized all-round, but the government said it was doing so to prevent cases of corona virus (Australi Travel Ban Update). The government had promised to continue these restrictions till May 15. However, on Friday, Morrison has admitted that there is no need to extend this ban further.
Three flight arrangements
Australia will arrange three flights between 15 May and 31 May. However, there will still be a ban on commercial flights coming from India. Morrison said these flights would bring back stranded Australian nationals to India (Australi Travel Ban 2021). He said, “Attention will be paid to the return of Australian citizens, residents and families who have registered with our High Commission and Consular Office in India”. Everyone’s COVID will be tested before boarding the plane. The Prime Minister said, “Three flights will run for 900 uninsured people in mid-May.”
Flight number may increase
Morrison said that three aircraft would be landing in Darwin later this month. Apart from this, flights coming from India will also land in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, which means that there can be 6 flights. He called the tough decision necessary to save Australia from the third wave of COVID, and said that thousands of people who had already returned from India were quarantined and that more people would come after 15 May (Australi Travel Ban 2021). Therefore, everything is being done wisely. Official figures show that at present there are 9000 Australians in India who want to return home.
