Chinese Hackers: Suspected hackers sponsored by the Chinese government have targeted India’s power sector in recent months. Threat intelligence firm Recorded Future Inc said in a report published on Wednesday that this is being done as part of a cyber espionage campaign.
The hackers mainly targeted seven “load dispatch” centers in North India, the report said. These centers are responsible for real time operation for grid control and distribution of electricity in the disputed area along the Indo-China border in Ladakh. One of these dispatch centers was previously targeted by another hacking group RedEcho, which was caught by Recorded Future.
Power grid assets targeted
The Recorded Future report says, groups affiliated to the Chinese government have been targeting India’s power grid assets for a long time. They do limited espionage or obtain traditionally confidential information. “We think they want to get first-hand information about critical infrastructure and/or future activity,” said Recordet Future.

Attempts to breach the National Emergency Response System
According to the report, hackers have tampered with India’s National Emergency Response System and a subsidiary of a multinational logistics company.
According to Recorded Future, a hacking group called TAG-38 has used a software called ShadowPad, which has previously been associated with China’s People’s Liberation Army and the Ministry of Defense. The researchers did not reveal the identity of the victims.
Unusual method used for hacking
Jonathan Kondra, a senior manager at Recorded Future, said: “The way the hackers tried to infiltrate was unusual. He used the Internet of Things and cameras. The devices used to break into the system were from South Korea and Taiwan.
There was no response from the Chinese Foreign Ministry in this regard. China has consistently denied involvement in malicious cyber activities. Indian officials also did not respond to a request for comment.
