Birbhum Violence Case: Trinamool Congress’s powerful block president from Rampurhat in West Bengal, Anarul Hussain, is now in police custody over the violence in the area last week. Local people say that he was helpful but was also involved in nefarious activities.
The police suspect that some miscreants had set fire to the houses of his distant relatives Sona Sheikh, Mihilal Sheikh, Fatik Sheikh and Banirul Shaikh to protest the killing of Bhadu Sheikh. At present, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team is investigating this entire incident.
Sona Sheikh’s sister Sabina Bibi (whose family was killed in the violence) told News18 that it was Anrul who would decide whose case would be taken up and whose case would not be taken up by the police. Bhadu Sheikh (Sona’s rival whose murder allegedly incited violence) was very powerful. He is behind all this. They used to collect extortion from the lorries.

A CBI team reached Bogtui village near Rampurhat on Saturday and started investigation into the violence. On March 21, unidentified men torched 10 houses in the same village, killing nine people, including seven women and two children. However, Anarul says that he has been implicated in this case.
Who was Bhadu Sheikh?
Bhadu Sheikh was a resident of Bogtui village near Rampurhat in Birbhum. Bogtui village has two localities, Purbapara (East) and Paschimpara (West). Shaikh was from Paschimpara, but many of his relatives, including Sona Shaikh, Mihilal Shaikh and Banirul Shaikh, lived in Poorbapara. Local people say that Bhadu Sheikh was associated with Congress before joining TMC.
When Bhadu joined TMC, he became an influential figure in Birbhum’s Rampurhat. It is said that as he rose in power and influence, he became a stronger figure for the ruling party. Many people allege that Sheikh earned a lot of money by extorting extortion from truck drivers carrying sand and stone chips. According to the police, Bhadu Sheikh was murdered on March 21 at 8:30 pm when he was at a tea stall.
Police also under suspicion!
Sources said the role of the police is also under doubt and the CBI is probing it. Locals say that there are many ‘Bhadu Sheikh’ in the area, whose life and livelihood depend on illegal extortion and the rivalry can sometimes take a dire turn.
In the early hours of March 21, unidentified assailants torched around 10 houses with petrol bombs in Bogtui village near Rampurhat, killing nine. The attack is believed to have been planned to avenge the murder of local TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh.
