Bihar government has proposed to reserve 33 per cent seats for girls in medical and engineering colleges of the state. Probably this could be the first time in any state. According to the news of the Indian Express, the state government is preparing to bring Bihar Engineering Universities Bill and Bihar Medical Education Bill in the next assembly session so that this proposal can be given a formal shape.
The state has 2035 engineering seats and 1330 medical and BDS seats. The state government runs 11 medical and 38 engineering colleges. According to a government official, 30 per cent of the state’s government medical colleges are women, but only 15 per cent in engineering colleges.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in a review meeting on Wednesday decided to reserve one-third of the seats in the state’s medical and engineering colleges for girls. Apart from this, he has talked about opening an engineering college in every district and medical college in some districts. According to the Chief Minister, through this it will be ensured that the children of Bihar do not have to go out for technical education. Apart from this, the review meeting also discussed the opening of exclusive engineering and medical universities in the state. The Raj government has proposed to set up four new universities.
Bihar government running many women centric schemes
The Nitish government had earlier reserved 50 per cent seats for girls in primary schools and 35 per cent in secondary schools in 2006. Apart from this, the state government has reserved 35 per cent seats in police jobs for women and 33 per cent in other government jobs also for women. In order to encourage higher education for girls, the state government gives a cash incentive of Rs 50,000 to girls after passing their graduation. Apart from this, women-centric schemes such as cycles and school uniforms for girls are very popular which have now been made available for boys as well.
