United Nations Report on Food Crises: A United Nations report has revealed that there are 15.5 crore people around the world who are not having even two days of food, out of which 133,000 are those who are very close to death due to hunger. This report has been prepared on 55 countries in the year 2020. The report has been prepared jointly by 16 organizations. This situation is likely to remain serious in 2021 as well. Conflict behind this situation, damage to economy due to COVID-19 epidemic and bad weather are the reasons.
Compared to 2019, two crore more people have entered the state of facing starvation in 2020. According to the report, two-thirds of these people in crisis are from these ten countries – Congo, Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, Northern Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Zimbabwe and Haiti. The one lakh 33 thousand people who are stranded between hunger, lack and death are from Burkina Faso, South Sudan and Yemen.
‘No place for starvation in 21st century’
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said about this 307-page food crisis report that people who need a nutritious diet immediately and who are in a serious state of food insecurity need additional support. He said that there is no place of starvation and famine in the 21st century. We have to end both hunger and conflict. Arif Hussain, Chief Economist of the World Food Program, has said in a UN press conference that the biggest cause of food crisis is conflict, due to which 9.9 million people in 23 countries have faced food crisis last year.
‘Necessary to find political solution’
He said that until the political solution to these conflicts is found, the number of people who need humanitarian aid will increase. The report said that 40.5 crore people from 17 countries have suffered severe food insecurity last year as the economy has also been affected due to the epidemic. With this, the epidemic has lost four times more jobs than the economic crisis of 2008, due to which the income of the people has reduced. Dominic Barjan, director of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, said that 60 to 80 per cent of the 15.5 crore depended on agriculture but only 30 per cent were given assistance last year.
