NEW YORK — A bidder has paid practically $2.8 million at public sale for a jacket worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin on the historic first mission to the moon’s floor in 1969.
The $2,772,500 paid for the Apollo 11 Inflight Coverall Jacket is the best for any American space-flown artifact bought at public sale, in line with Sotheby’s, which dealt with the sale. The unidentified profitable bidder, who participated by cellphone, outlasted a number of others in a bidding that spanned nearly 10 minutes.
The jacket shows Aldrin’s title tag on the left breast above the Apollo 11 mission emblem, and the American flag on the left shoulder. It is manufactured from a fire-resistant materials often known as Beta fabric that was integrated in spacesuits in response to the fireplace that killed three astronauts aboard Apollo 1 in 1967, in line with Sotheby’s.
Aldrin and Neil Armstrong turned the primary astronauts to stroll on the moon on July 20, 1969.
