India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations issued a press release saying that Jaishankar conveyed that India values the leadership of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in these challenging times.

Antonio Guterres May Selected Again as UN General Secretary: The United Nations Security Council (UNSG) has recommended the name of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for a second five-year term as head of the world body. The new term will start from January 1 next year. The fifteen-member Security Council met in-camera, in which members unanimously approved a resolution recommending Guterres’ name for a second term as Secretary-General.
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador TS Tirumurti tweeted, “India welcomes the acceptance of the Security Council resolution recommending a second term for the UN Secretary General.” Last month, India backed Guterres’ candidacy as the head of the world body for a second term starting January 2022. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar (S. Jaishankar) had met Guterres at the United Nations Headquarters and expressed India’s support for his second term.
India supported the second candidature
Jaishankar had tweeted after the meeting, ‘India values the leadership of UNSG at this challenging time. His candidature for the second term has been endorsed. Later, India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations issued a press release saying that Jaishankar conveyed that India values the leadership of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in these challenging times (India on UN General Secretary Post). He was also apprised of India’s support of his candidacy for a second term.
First term will end on December 31
Guterres took over as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 January 2017 and his first term ends on 31 December this year (About Antonio Guterres). The term of the next Secretary General will start from January 1, 2022. Guterres, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, previously served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015. Guterres has been the only official candidate for the post of Secretary General, nominated by the Portuguese government.
