In Germany, the trade union Verdi has asked the employees of Amazon to go on strike for four days from the Easter festival on Sunday. This has been said on behalf of the trade union, so that pressure can be increased on Amazon to increase the salary of the employees. Verdi has asked employees working in six Amazon sites in Germany to go on strike. This will put pressure on the American e-commerce giant to recognize collective bargaining agreements.
According to Reuters news, Vardy said the strike would take place at two sites in Rhineburg, Verne, Coblenz, Leipzig and Bad Harsfeld. This would be an indication of an informal start of negotiations to increase the salaries of employees of retail and mail order industry. However, there are signs of formal talks starting in the coming few weeks. Trade Union Verdi representative Orhan Akman said that Amazon Coronavirus is making huge amount of money during the crisis. Because of this, the deduction in salary should be stopped.
There has been a long-running tussle between Amazon and the trade union
The trade union demands that the salary of employees working in the retail and mail order industry be increased by 4.5 percent. Akman said, this may be possible on Amazon this year as well. There has been a long-standing battle between unions in Amazon and Germany over better salaries and facilities for employees. Since 2013, there have been many demonstrations against Amazon here. Germany is the second largest market for Amazon after the US.
What did Amazon say about the strike?
On the other hand, Amazon has put its side regarding the salary of the employees. The company says that it provides better salary to the employees and best facilities are provided to them. Amazon says that during the first demonstrations at the union’s request, 90 percent of the employees working on its sites have not participated in the protest. During this time the work has been going on smoothly.
