Social activist and MLA from Assam’s Sivasagar seat Akhil Gogoi and three of his associates were cleared by the Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) of the charges leveled under the UAPA. After this he was also released from jail. He was in jail for the last two years in a sedition case. Cases were registered against him under UAPA for inciting violence against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Assam.
Gogoi and his associates were booked under UAPA in two cases
Gogoi and his associates were made accused in two cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 i.e. UAPA. But Gogoi, an independent MLA from Sivasagar, and two of his associates were acquitted in the first case on June 22. On Thursday, he was also acquitted in the second case.

During the movement against CAA, accused were made of violence
NIA Special Judge Pranjal Das did not file any charges against Gogoi and his three accomplices Dhairya Kunwar, Manas Kunwar and Bitu Sonowal in the Chandmari case. In this case, he was accused of having links with Maoists. NIA was investigating in two cases against him. The first case was registered at Chandmari and the second at Chabula police station. Gogoi and his associates were accused of leading a violent mob against the CAA. The court had sent Gogoi’s release order to the jail on Thursday. After that he was released.
Akhil Gogoi won the election from Sivasagar seat in Assam. Also in March this year, Akhil Gogoi, in a letter written from jail, had alleged that he was subjected to mental and physical torture while in custody. NIA officials had offered him immediate bail if he joined the RSS and BJP. Gogoi was arrested from Jorhat in December 2019 during the anti-CAA campaign.
