The political situation in Pakistan is very fragile at present. Constantly rising inflation and unemployment have increased the difficulties of Prime Minister Imran Khan. The way the opposition has targeted Imran on these issues from above, the government is restless. Empty government treasury and increasing debt has brought a cloud of ‘crisis’ over Imran’s chair. The 11 Pakistan opposition parties together have formed the ‘Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). Its purpose is to oust Imran from power.
PDM has said that all the party MPs in its alliance will resign from the National Assembly. In such a situation, there is a discussion that if this step of the opposition, the government of Imran Khan will fall? When there is no opposition, then what is the work of power? Who will question the government? Many such questions have arisen. Overall, it can be said that the political drama in Pakistan is reaching its peak. In this case, let us understand some things related to Imran’s power.
Opposition said- Our MPs will resign from the National Assembly
The ‘Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) is headed by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of the JUI-F. He said that the MPs of the opposition party included in the PDM will resign from the National Assembly. After meeting with the leaders of the opposition in Islamabad, Fazlur Rahman said, nine opposition parties have agreed to resign from the National Assembly. MPs of these parties will soon resign from the National Assembly.
What is the strength in the National Assembly of Pakistan?
There are 342 seats in the National Assembly, but two seats are still vacant. The ruling PTI currently has 156 MPs. Imran’s party has the support of MPs from six parties. It has the support of seven MQM-P, five of BAP, five of PML-Q, three of GDM, one of AML MPs. Apart from this, one JWP and two IND MPs have given external support to the Imran government. In this way, the Imran government has the support of 177 MPs.
At the same time, PML (N) has 83 members in the National Assembly and 55 members of PPP. Apart from this, a total of 160 MPs, including MPs from other opposition parties, are sitting in the opposition. At every rally, Maulana Fazlur Rahman is constantly reiterating that the opposition MPs will resign and shake the foundation of the government. In such a situation, the question arises that if the opposition resigns, will there be a political crisis in Pakistan.
Will elections be held again with the resignation of the opposition?
The decision of the opposition MPs to resign from the National Assembly is not going to have much effect on the government. A lawyer based in Karachi said that if the opposition resigns in a big way, then it will technically have no legal effect. All the seats will be vacant, elections will be held again. However, it will have a major political impact. On the other hand, the government is not going to be harmed by this, because the government will have one more chance to win these seats.
What does the law of Pakistan say on such matters?
There is no mention made in the constitution of Pakistan to deal with the situation that arose after the resignation of the opposition. However, it definitely tells when the National Assembly is to be dissolved. Article 58 of the Constitution states that if the President is advised by the Prime Minister to dissolve the National Assembly, it has to be dissolved within 48 hours of the advice. The constitution also states that if the motion of no confidence is passed against the Prime Minister and the majority of the National Assembly is not proved through the members, the President can dissolve it.
