These comments show increasing tension between France and Britain over the right to fish. This dispute has been the main issue in the post-Brexit trade negotiations. What is the dispute about killing fish?
French fishermen spoke of difficulties in obtaining licenses to fish. They said that because of this they are not able to kill fish in British waters. To obtain a license under an agreement with the European Union, French boat operators will have to show an old fishing record in the area. At the same time, Jersey has the sole power to issue licenses and until last week all fishing boats were required to have a license to operate there.
On Friday, the Jersey government granted permits to 41 French ships, as these ships had all the equipment through which they could be tracked. The French Ministry of Fisheries said that the new rules indicate where ships can go and where not. Apart from this, it has also been decided that how many days ships will be allowed to kill fish. Anik Girardin said that this is unacceptable. He said that if we accept this rule of Jersey, then it will jeopardize our access to the sea.
