This is not the first time such an attempt has been made by digging a tunnel from the Detention Center. In 2001, 23 refugees fled by digging a tunnel outside the Villawood Detention Center in Sydney.

According to Refugee Advocates, a 20-meter-long underground tunnel has been discovered in an Immigration Detention Center in Australia. The nearly three-meter deep incomplete tunnel at the Falcon compound of Yongah Hill Detention Center in Western Australia was reportedly found on Monday morning.
The campaign group Refugee Action Coalition said that the tunnel was built under room number 6F. The Guardian quoted refugee lawyers as saying that the tunnel was built in several months. However, it has not been revealed yet who and what has dug this tunnel?
23 refugees fled in 2001
This is not the first time that such an attempt has been made to escape from the detention center by digging a tunnel. In 2001, 23 refugees fled by digging a tunnel outside the Villawood Detention Center in Sydney. Refugee advocates said the latest escape attempt highlighted long-term detention at the coastal detention center.
According to Australian Border Force figures, as of 28 February 2021, around 320 people were held at Yonghah Hill and many refugees are long-held prisoners, who have been imprisoned for more than five years. Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said in a statement that the ‘systematic misuse of long-term detention’ is hidden behind the walls of the country’s ‘internment regime’.
Indefinite imprisonment is destructive
Rintoul has accused the refugees of being deprived of their freedom and mental health. He claimed that no monitoring of the judicial system that applies to prisoners is applied to refugees. The spokesman said that the indefinite imprisonment is meaningless and destructive. The powers to revoke visas punish refugees twice, first by the judicial system and then by immigration detention.
