Hallmarking on gold jewelery and related items has become mandatory from Tuesday after the government extended the deadline of June 1 in view of the COVID-19 epidemic. As per the new guidelines, jewelers across India will now be allowed to sell only 14, 18 and 22 carat gold items. According to the government, there has been a 25% increase in hallmarking centers in the last five years. With the existing capabilities of certification centres, India has the capacity to hallmark around 140 million items per year.
Now it comes to testing the purity of gold! The government has launched a new BIS-Care App in the country for users to check the quality of ISI and the hallmark of any product. BIS is the national standard-setting body in India. The BIS-Care app will allow users to check and know the quality of products that are ISI and Hallmark quality-certified. This will allow users to be made aware of the authenticity of the products and even register complaints about products that are not certified.
This app is available in both Hindi and English for ease of use. With the app, users can access the complete complaint management system and use the same app as the BIS website.
