Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane on Sunday urged the United Nations to increase the budget for its peacekeeping missions. General Narwane also emphasized the need to provide appropriate logistical and better technology support for peace operations in view of emerging challenges.
General Narwane, who is on a five-day official visit to Bangladesh, attended a conference of army chiefs held in Dhaka on the sidelines of military exercises of several countries. The Indian Army’s’ Additional Directorate of Public Information ‘(ADG PI) tweeted that General Narwane, who arrived in Dhaka on a five-day official visit, addressed the keynote address at the Army Chiefs’ Conference on the’ changing nature of global conflicts: the role of UN peacekeepers’ gave. It was organized by General Aziz Ahmed, the Bangladeshi counterpart of General Narwane.
Appeal to provide better technology
The ‘Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate of the Bangladesh Ministry of Defense, quoting General Narwane’s address at the conference, said that he stressed the budget increase for UN peace activities. Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen was the chief guest at the event.
The Indian Army Chief, while pointing to the emerging challenges for UN peacekeeping operations, called for proper logistical and better technology support for this. He said that United Nations peacekeeping operations should be run on partnership basis.
Changes in the nature of ‘peace operations’
UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Expeditionary Force Commander Lt Gen Dennis Gillenspory, Commander of UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Expeditionary Force in Central African Region Lt Gen Sidaki Daniel Traore and Deputy Chief of Bhutanese Army Brigadier General Dorji Rinchen, etc. at the conference joined in.
Senior diplomats, security strategists and police officers also attended the seminar. The army chief also interacted with senior officials of the participating countries and military observers from other countries during the program. Momen said at the conference that in recent times there has been a change in the nature of peace operations and today these campaigns are more than peace monitoring operations.
Troop
The conference was organized under the anti-terrorism exercise, Shantir Agrasena (forerunner of peace), started on 4 April. A contingent of 30 personnel from the Indian Army is participating in this exercise along with the Royal Bhutan Army, Sri Lankan Army and Bangladesh Army. This exercise will be held on Monday. Military observers from the US, UK, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Singapore are also participating in the exercise.
The aim of the exercise is to strengthen processes and increase interoperability between neighboring countries to ensure strong peacekeeping in the region. The armies of the participating countries shared their valuable experiences and refined their practice and procedures in peace operations.
General Aziz arrived at Ahmed’s call
General Narwane has come here at the invitation of his Bangladeshi counterpart General Aziz Ahmed. His visit comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the neighboring country about two weeks ago and met the top leadership to strengthen strategic ties. The year 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh, Bangladesh’s liberation from Pakistan, and the birth centenary of ‘Bangabandhu’ Mujibur Rahman.
