In the next 25 years i.e. in the year 2047, independent India will be 100 years old, according to the Finance Minister, at that time more than half of the country’s population will live in cities, so it is necessary to plan from now on. - In 100 years of India, more than half of the country’s population would be residing in urban areas. The Finance Minister said that in such a situation, a systematic urban development is very important so that the economic potential of the country can be utilized. For this, the Finance Minister stressed the need to develop Mega Cities and its surrounding areas as existing centers of economic development.
- The Finance Minister pointed out the need to increase the facilities in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities so that they can be made future ready.

- A high level committee has been constituted to make recommendations on policy, capacity preparation, planning, re-implementation and administration for cities. Eminent urban planners, urban economists and institutions will be included in this committee.

- For the development of cities, the Finance Minister has announced assistance to the states. The Finance Minister has announced to give the benefits of public transport projects and financial assistance of the Central Government given under the AMRUT scheme to the states.
- Five existing educational institutions from different sectors will be identified as Centers of Excellence for developing specialized knowledge in city planning and design and for proven training in these areas. Out of this, each center will be given an endowment fund of Rs 250 crore. Apart from this, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will provide for urban planning courses in other educational institutions and improve the quality.
- Changes will be brought in the way public transport is used in cities. For this, commuting through clean technology and governance solutions, zero fossil fuel policy and EV (electric vehicles) will be promoted.
