COVID-19 has accelerated digitization in the healthcare sector. Telemedicine services and online consultations are becoming a new norm and the use of smart devices and applications to monitor health is also increasing.
Kolkata-based HealthTech and lifestyle platform FITZY + aims to help people monitor their health from their smartphones. The app helps users track physical activities, fitness sessions and heart health.
FITZY + was launched in January 2020 by two siblings Archan Paul and Soumya Paul. The mobile app deals with daily physical activities and cardiovascular health and provides users with a real-time health score. The brothers, who completed their masters in computer applications, have been working together since starting FITZY +’s parent company Arputer Technologies in 2010.
Speaking to BusinessKhabar, co-founder and CEO Archan says the idea of launching FITZY + originated last year, while both were looking for a fitness app to track their daily activities and calorie consumption.
“Like foodies, desk workers, and people who were too lazy to work every day, we wanted to know how many calories we were burning every day so that we could eat fast food without any worries Google Fit and Samsung Health had options to count calories and steps, but those apps did not provide easy information. Other apps were also focused on training and diet. Archan says none of them was in conformity with the requirement.
How can FITZY + help?
The app monitors heart health by keeping track of heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart output, and arterial stiffness. It monitors daily physical activities such as move minutes, step count, heart point, calorie count etc.
According to Archan, the application tracks parameters with sensors available in smartphones and also smartwatches/bands that can be integrated with the app. These parameters are analyzed in real-time using an AI-driven algorithm and thus a health score is generated.
They told,
“Fitness training or gym sessions are not always possible for many people due to a busy lifestyle or age. Instead, daily activities such as brisk walking, standing and walking for five minutes every hour during the workday, gardening etc. help us stay fit and active. FITZY + tracks all these activities which are often ignored. “
The app also profiles users based on their fitness level and helps improve their health score by suggesting lifestyle changes.
According to the co-founder, the app was launched in January in its beta mode for select users in India, Japan, Israel and the US. The app released B2B in February after receiving positive feedback. Wholesale license deals under the B2B segment are awarded to businesses and offices that integrate the app with their own or third-party hardware to monitor the health of their employees and customers. This was the time when the COVID-19 began to spread worldwide and FITZY + proved to be a basic health parameters monitoring tool. Studies have shown that people with poor health and pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure, etc. are prone to coronavirus.
Archan says,
“By then the COVID-19 epidemic and lockout had begun and we were not very hopeful of the success of the product. Surprisingly we saw a significant increase in user customization in the B2B segment. By the end of June we began to receive feedback that the application was being used in significant numbers for remote monitoring of health and activities for individuals with COVID-19 exposure. We didn’t know about the disease when we made the app, but it helped. ‘
Business and way forward
The co-founder and CEO revealed that the B2C version of the app was released on the Google Playstore in July. The B2B version of the app has around 6,000 subscribers, but they refused to reveal the names due to NDA restrictions. According to Google Play Store, B2C app has been downloaded more than 100 times.
He said that about 35 percent of the total consumers expose COVID (under home quarantine) or use the app to monitor their health during COVID post-recovery.
Archan claims,
“The app has been receiving a 200 percent increase in adding new users since launch. Most of its users are from India, America and Europe. According to server logs a single installation of FITZY + is used by many users to track health. FITZY + has the facility to host multiple users simultaneously in different workspaces. ”
The co-founder clarified that the application is currently supported by a limited number of handsets and wearable devices.
“Fitness-related features can be used in any handset that runs at least Android 9 (Pie) OS and has graphics processing capability with HHD resolution. The cardiovascular feature of the app has been officially supported in 10 Samsung flagship handsets. ”
FITZY + is sponsored by parent company Arputer Technologies, a boutique embedded mobility and cloud software technology company, with an initial investment of $ 1 million.
The co-founder declined to divulge details about the revenue model but said that the B2C version of the app is available for free.
Talking about future plans, Archan says that the company aims to ship 10,000 users. It is also working to enable the integration of Tygen and Google Wear-based smart-watches with the app.
Archan says,
“The long-term plan is to expand and potentially acquire this business unit.
