Strong growth in tax collection
There is good news on the tax front for the Modi government. In the first quarter of this financial year, the government’s tax collection increased by 86 percent. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave this information. He said that in the April-June quarter this year, the total tax collection of the government increased by about 86 percent to more than Rs 5.57 lakh crore. He gave this information in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.
Chaudhary said that Rs 2.46 lakh crore was collected through direct tax and Rs 3.11 lakh crore through indirect tax. He said that the tax collection in the first quarter of the financial year 2021-22 stood at Rs 5.57 lakh crore, which is about 86 percent more than the corresponding period last year.
Strict action on tax evaders
In response to another question, he said that the Income Tax Department takes strict action against tax evaders as per law. Under the rules of direct tax, survey, search, inquiry, assessment of income, levy of tax and interest, fine and if necessary, filing a case in a criminal court are included. 107 cases have been filed under the Black Money and Tax Act, 2015.

As of May 31, 2021, assessment orders have been issued in 166 cases under the Tax Act, 2015. Through this a demand of Rs 8,216 crore has been sent. Apart from this, tax has been imposed on undisclosed income of Rs 8,465 crore. A penalty of Rs 1,294 crore has been imposed in the HSBC case. Undisclosed debt of Rs 20,078 and Rs 246 crore has been unearthed in the Panama Papers and Paradise Papers leak cases, respectively.
Rs 164.5 crore spent on portal
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed that the government has paid Rs 164.5 crore to Infosys between January 2019 and June 2021 to prepare the new website of the Income Tax Department. He said that Infosys got the contract to prepare the new website of Income Tax through open tender. The contract was issued on the Central Public Procurement Portal (CPPP).
Pankaj Chaudhary said that between January 2019 and June 2021, Infosys has been paid 164.5 crores in different parts for this project. He said that on January 16, 2019, the Union Cabinet had approved Rs 4,241.97 crore for this project. This expenditure will be done over the next 8.5 years. This includes the cost of Managed Service Provider (MSP), GST, rent, postage and project management.
