The employment scenario in India has changed rapidly in the last few decades. It is estimated that by 2022, about 37 percent of India’s workforce will be in those jobs where it will be necessary for them to learn modern skills according to the changing times. Therefore, it will be necessary to understand as soon as possible which sectors will generate more number of jobs, which modern skills will be required and how efficiency can be increased.
More than 50 percent of the country’s population is below 25 years of age. Therefore, given the need of Industry 4.0 for work-skilled, fully trained employees, the focus has been on early skill development. Until recently, only 10 percent of the Indian workforce received formal skill training. According to ‘Aspiring Minds’, only 26 per cent of engineers are employable and our students are not ready for the next decade.
But times are changing. Emphasis is being laid on vocational training and skill development in collaboration with various partners. For example, a major initiative has been taken to streamline skill development by starting the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. This is the reason that many professional and skill development companies have started taking necessary skill training to the people by taking initiative themselves. To make this initiative more successful, the Government of India has planned to train 40 crore Indians by 2022 through the National Skill Development Mission.
Companies are customizing training according to the needs
Skilling companies are customizing the training according to the requirement. Developing skilled and certified workforce to overcome skill shortage. Skill training institutes are providing timely, employable skills. Since the existing infrastructure of ITI (Industrial Training Institute), ITC (Industrial Training Center) and other government-aided institutes are not sufficient to train people for future employment opportunities. Therefore, the doors of digital platforms are opening for the learning candidates and the industry will benefit from it from day one as high-tech tech savvy people.
To train millions of people in India, more vocational training centers will be needed in the country. The current infrastructure is not sufficient to meet the growing demand. Therefore, not only to increase skills but also to ensure skilling in the right domain in view of the needs of the industry, it is necessary for the government and industry to come together.
Industry needs to become digital
A large number of skilled people will be required for training and management work under training programs. Major driving factories such as technology, e-commerce and telecommunications are affecting all industries in such a way that they redefine the strategies for major changes in their products and services. With the advent of digital technology, it has become necessary for the industry to be digital. It is applicable in almost all sectors like Technology, BFSI, Healthcare, Retail, Transportation, Hospitality, Tourism, Beauty, Textiles, Aviation etc. and opens doors to a huge demand for talent with new skills.
How skills will work in future
New digital courses and new employment opportunities are opening up in the skill development areas. The World Economic Forum’s ‘Future of Jobs Report 2018’ envisages that in the coming years, general skills will not be able to survive in the field, but two types of skill sets will emerge – the first equipped with highly developed technical capabilities (eg machine learning, big data, Robotics etc.) and other ‘human’ skills (sales and marketing, training and development, organization development etc.). This shows that half of the skills required to succeed in the future are knowledge-intensive, while the other 50 percent are focused on contact and cooperation with others in the field of work.
This fact has been incorporated from school to formal higher education, according to the demands of the new-age skills, economy and industry. Also, outside the scope of the formal education system, skill creations need more concrete and better action at every step so that the current challenges can be overcome.
