2000 centers increased after budget
Talking after the budget this year, around 2000 new Jan Aushadhi centers have been opened across the country. Till February, cheap medicines were being provided to people through about 4500 centers in the country. Now their number has increased to around 6600. There was a target to open 2500 new centers in the year 2020, around which the government has reached. Through this scheme, the target is to open 10500 centers across the country by 2024, which should have access to cheap medicines at the block level.

Lockdown increases challenges
A senior official of the BPPI, which is responsible for the Jan Aushadhi Center, says that due to the lockdown across the country due to Corona, there were some problems in extending this scheme. Had this not happened, the government would have easily crossed this year’s target. Recently, the Union Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizer also mentioned the 68-day lockdown. Between March and June, there were many challenges regarding the Janaushadhi scheme. Problems ranged from lack of raw materials to distribution supplies. New centers were also able to open very rarely.
Employs more than 12000 people
In fact, the government is not only opening cheap and quality drug stores across the country with the participation of common people through the Jan Aushadhi scheme, but it also aims to provide employment to more people through it. After fulfilling certain conditions in this scheme, any common citizen can participate. According to government data, more than 12000 people have got employment through this scheme, of which 1000 are women.

Common people: Generic and quality medicines are supplied by the government at the public health centers. The price of these drugs is 80 to 90 percent less than the market rate. That is, by purchasing medicines from these centers, up to 80 percent of money can be saved. The government is constantly increasing the number of medicines for these centers so that medicines do not fall short. Currently, there are around 1250 generic medicines and more than 200 equipments at these centers.
Center runners: The person who runs the Jan Aushadhi Center gets a fixed commission as well as an incentive on selling these medicines, which is his benefit. There is a commission in the form of a 20 per cent margin on total sales and is also inclusive. Earlier this commission was 15 percent, which was increased to 20 percent.
It can be understood that if you also sold 1 lakh rupees in a month, then you will get an income of 20 thousand rupees in that month. Apart from trade margin, the government will also give incentives on monthly sales, which will come in your bank account. The government provides assistance of up to Rs 2.5 lakhs for opening of Jan Aushadhi Center. This help is given as an incentive to those running medical stores.
Who can open Jan Aushadhi Center?
Under the first category, any person, unemployed pharmacist, doctor, registered medical practitioner can open a center. Under the second category, the trust, NGO, private hospital, society and self-help group will get the opportunity to open a Jan Aushadhi center. The third category will have an agency nominated by the state governments.
