From a Feb. 10, 2021, weblog submit by the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts. Politico reported on Thursday that the House Pro-Choice Caucus issued a memo to workers describing the phrase “choice” as “harmful language”:
“Choice” assumes that everybody can get an abortion, and somebody simply has to decide on whether or not or not they need one. . . . Black feminists and feminists of coloration have identified that this isn’t the case: the authorized proper to decide on to have an abortion doesn’t all the time imply somebody can truly get an abortion. “Choice” ignores the lived realities of individuals, particularly Black folks and other people of coloration, who face limitations which might be usually compounded by racist and classist insurance policies that maintain them from the care they want. . . . Full entry to care means not simply the flexibility to get care; it additionally implies that care must be revered and affirmed, with out social judgments. Well-meaning of us usually distinction “pro-choice” with “pro-abortion,” as in, I’m pro-choice, not pro-abortion. But that’s hurtful to individuals who’ve had abortions. It implies that abortion isn’t a great factor. . . .
So what can somebody say as a substitute of simply “pro-choice”? You can completely say:
• pro-abortion, pro-abortion rights, pro-abortion entry, or pro-abortion fairness—abortion isn’t a unclean phrase.
• pro-reproductive well being care or pro-reproductive freedom if you’re speaking about greater than abortion.
• “I support abortion access” or “I’m a supporter of abortion access.”
