In fact, a case came up in the Ahmedabad Consumer Court of Gujarat in which it was found that the customer bought goods worth Rs 2846 from a retail store. To keep it, he demanded a carry bag from the retail store. On asking for the carry bag, the store asked for a charge of Rs 10. When the customer refused to give it, the store argued that carry bags do not come for free. After the matter escalated, the complainant filed a case in the consumer court. The court ordered the retail store to return the money along with interest to the customer.

The consumer court directed the retail store to pay Rs 1000 for mental harassment of the customer and Rs 500 for legal fees. The court ordered the customer to return the money within 30 days. Also, interest of 8 per cent was also levied from the day the matter went to court. In fact, the customer argued in the court that when he went to the store to buy the goods, it was not mentioned anywhere in the store that he would have to pay separately for the carry bag, if the shopkeeper wanted money, then he should write it in the store. The matter should have been stuck somewhere.
