Pakistan’s Ministry of Textile Industry has sought permission from the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet to lift the ban on the import of cotton and cotton yarn from India.
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan
The Textile Ministry, headed by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, has recommended the removal of the ban on import of cotton from India to meet the shortage of raw materials in the country’s textile sector. This information was given on Tuesday in a media report. The Dawn News quoted government sources as saying that the Ministry of Textile Industry has sought permission from the Cabinet’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to lift the ban on the import of cotton and cotton yarn from India.
An official said that we had made a written request to the ECC more than a week ago to lift the ban. The decision of the coordination committee will be placed before the federal cabinet for formal approval. The Prime Minister has approved the submission of this application to the ECC as the in-charge of the Ministry of Commerce and Textiles.
Cotton yield decreased in Pakistan
The low cotton yield in Pakistan has led to the import of cotton from India. Due to shortage of cotton and yarn, users in Pakistan were forced to import cotton from the United States, Brazil and Uzbekistan.
Pakistan needs 12 million bales of cotton this year. The Ministry of National Food Security estimates that Pakistan will be able to produce only 7.7 million bales. He will import 5.5 million bails of Banki.
Pakistan will get these benefits by importing from India
Import of cotton from India will be very cheap and it will reach Pakistan within three to four days. Importing cotton yarn from other countries is not only expensive, but also takes one to two months to reach Pakistan.
According to the report of Pakistan Ministry of Textile Industry, textiles account for 60 percent of Pakistani exports. Its contribution to total manufacturing is about 46 percent and its contribution to the country’s economy is about 10 percent.
Let me tell you that in 2019, when Pakistan withdrew the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan canceled its trade with India. He also closed all air and land contacts with India. Also suspended trade and railway services.
