Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told the Lok Sabha on Monday that Madhya Pradesh levies the highest sales tax or VAT on petrol in the country, while Rajasthan levies the highest tax on diesel. . Petrol and diesel rates have reached their highest this month due to heavy taxes. Both the central and state governments levy a tax of 55 per cent of the retail price of petrol and 50 per cent of the diesel rates. While the central government levies a fixed excise duty of Rs 32.90 per liter on petrol and Rs 31.80 per liter on diesel.

The government earned so much from oil

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in a written reply to a question, “In the financial year 2020-21 (ending March 31, 2021), the central government has increased the excise duty / cess on petrol by Rs 1,01,598 lakh and diesel by Rs. ,33,296 crore has earned Rs. State governments levy VAT on the base price of petrol and diesel and the total amount of central taxes, he said.

The lowest VAT on petrol and diesel is Rs 4.82 per liter and Rs 4.74 per liter in Andaman and Nicobar Islands respectively. According to Puri’s reply, Madhya Pradesh levies VAT on petrol at Rs 31.55 per liter – the highest in the country, while Rajasthan charges Rs 21.82 per liter on diesel.

Rajasthan charges Rs 29.88 per liter VAT on petrol and Maharashtra charges Rs 29.55 per liter VAT. In the case of diesel, Andhra Pradesh charges Rs 21.78 per liter, Madhya Pradesh Rs 21.68, Odisha Rs 20.93 and Maharashtra Rs 20.85 per litre.

Will oil prices be the same

This information was given by Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in a written reply to the question of Uday Pratap Singh and Rodmal Nagar in Lok Sabha. The members had asked whether the government was preparing any plan to keep the prices of petrol and diesel uniform across the country.

He said that the prices of petrol and diesel vary in different markets due to factors like VAT, local realizations.
