In the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Industry and Mines, Government of Gujarat, M.K. Das and Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, signed a memorandum of understanding today.

Hindustan Zinc Limited, one of the largest zinc producers in the country and one of the top five in the world, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Gujarat for a 300 KTPA Greenfield Zinc Smelter Plant at Doswada GIDC, Tapi. In an area of 415 acres, the facility will cost Rs. 5,000-Rs. More than Rs 10,000 crore will be invested and it will directly and indirectly employ 5,000 people. The plant will be operational by 2022.
Will be one of the lowest cost smelters in the world
According to the company, this is the first Hindustan Zinc facility in the state of Gujarat to be installed with zero discharge technology and will be one of the lowest cost smelters in the world. The new facility, located near major markets for port and consumption, will produce zinc and other small metals. Doswada is close to Hazira Port (110 km) and the next Magadalla Port (90 km). The new facility will be a model plant, incorporating state-of-the-art technology, automation, high standards of environmental and health safety compliance.
Full cooperation from the government: Vijay Rupani
On this occasion, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said, “I am happy to provide all the necessary cooperation from our state government to make the plant operational in the targeted time.” I hope that Hindustan will benefit from the Zinc State’s vision and efforts to develop an efficient and advanced industrial ecosystem. This new feature will be closer to the downstream user industry. In addition it will also help in the development of industrial clusters and allied industries in the future.
Zinc production will place India on the global map
Anil Agarwal, non-executive chairman and founder of Vedanta Group, said the new plant is not only a world-class facility, but the highest level of the group’s study in creating a model that incorporates high standards of efficiency, eco-friendliness, technology and automation, quality and structure. Together with this facility we will place India on the global map as the most effective producer of zinc.
Plan to complete Doswada unit by 2022
Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said, “Vedanta Group and Hindustan Zinc have worked on the agenda of community development and upliftment as the focal point of our business. We are excited to establish a coastal operation in the state of Gujarat and this place is ideal for the project. We plan to complete the Doswada unit by the year 2022 and this plant will create employment opportunities for thousands of people in the state as well as establish a benchmark in the industry as an environmentally responsible and future-ready facility.
