Public sector banks have earned a net profit in the last financial year 2020-21 after suffering losses for five consecutive years. A report by ICRA Ratings said that state-run banks have made unexpected gains on their bond portfolios, turning them into profits again. Through this, PSBs booked profit of 31600 crores while profit before tax stood at 45,900 crores for the entire financial year.

The Icra Ratings report said, “Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, public sector banks are making trading profits on their bond portfolios. Repo rate cut by 1.15 percent
During March, 2020 to May, 2020, it has been brought down to 3.35 percent by reducing the repo rate by 1.15 percent to four percent and with a reduction of 1.55 percent in the reverse repo rate.
