Electricity distribution companies in the capital Delhi (Power Discom in Delhi) have demanded a hike in electricity rates from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). Electricity companies say that the burden of losses is getting heavy on them. Power distribution companies BRPL, BYPL and TPDDL asked DERC to consider increasing the electricity rates as their total losses in the financial year 2019-20 reached around Rs 3000 crore. The DERC has asked the consumers and other stakeholders to put forward their case in this regard by 26 March.
According to the petition of the three power distribution companies, their standalone revenue was reduced by about three thousand crores rupees in the financial year 2019-20. Of this, BRPL’s revenue was Rs 1565 crore, BYPL’s Rs 609 crore and TPDDL’s Rs 794 crore. Companies said that by March 31, 2020, their total shortfall of revenue had gone beyond Rs 50 thousand crore. This includes Rs 28,623 crore of BRPL, Rs 19,213 crore of BYPL and Rs 3,810 crore of TPDDL.
Subsidy transfer proposal through DBT
BSES electricity distribution companies (BSES discoms) BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BSES Yamuna Power Limited) have proposed to set a suitable rate to DERC to fix the estimated revenue gap. Both discoms have proposed to transfer the subsidy of the Delhi government directly to the consumers through DBT.
Proposal of separate rate for those who spend more electricity
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has proposed a separate rate for higher power consumption in the domestic category. Companies have also made new connections and Aadhaar and PAN cards mandatory for existing customers have proposed.
