Who has made this medicine
The 2DG drug has been developed by DRDO’s Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) in association with Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. Only Dr. Reddy’s Lab will make this medicine for the general public. This medicine will be available in the form of a powder. Last year, when the first wave of COVID-19 started in India, since then scientists of INMAS started working on it. In May 2020, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) approved the Phase 2 trial on COVID patients of this drug. It was revealed in the trial that the drug COVID is safe for the patients and also helps in recovery.
Where did the trial take place
DCGI approved the emergency use of this drug based on the trial data. The trial was carried out on 220 patients between December 2020 and March 2021 in 27 Covid-19 hospitals in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
How does medicine work
2DG is actually an altered form of the 2DG molecule that treats tumors, cancer cells. It was found in the trial that not only is 2DG COVID effective in treating patients, the admission in the hospital also reduces the dependence on oxygen of the patients. Permission to use this medicine like secondary medicine has been given. This drug is largely like glucose, but not glucose. On taking the medicine dose, the virus will take this glucose analog and get trapped in it. As a result, the virus will not be able to make its copies, that is, its growth will stop.
