The 161st anniversary of the Income Tax Department was celebrated today by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and all its regional offices across the country. In her message to the Income Tax Department, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman appreciated the department for being successful in implementing in the right spirit the various reform measures undertaken by the government since 2014. Of. He said that the contribution of honest taxpayers in becoming partners in the progress of the country by dutifully paying their share of taxes definitely deserves recognition.
He appreciated the department for continuing to work towards simplifying its systems and procedures and making the working of the department hassle free, fair and transparent. He appreciated the taxpayers for discharging their compliance obligations despite the hardships caused by this pandemic. Remembering the officers and employees who lost their lives due to this pandemic in the course of performing their duties, he said that their contribution towards the national interest can never be forgotten.

Facilitation to taxpayers through online platform
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary lauded the department for performing well in the dual role of revenue collection and implementation of taxes in a fair and transparent manner. He said that most of the procedures and compliance requirements have been shifted to online platforms and the need for taxpayers to visit Income Tax offices has been eliminated or greatly reduced. He said that the interaction with the taxpayers is now based on a sense of trust and respect while relying more on voluntary compliance.
Increase in tax collection
Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj congratulated the Income Tax Department. He appreciated the department for being able to adapt itself to the sudden changes in the economy and achieve a decent growth in tax collection. He also appreciated the various initiatives taken by the department with a view to make its functioning trust-based and tax-centric while revamping its approach related to revenue collection.
