Farmer Success Story Silk Farming

It is an agro-based cottage industry! Early production in this industry can be started at a low cost in the rural area itself! Along with agricultural work and other domestic works, this industry (Silk Farming) can be adopted! Being labour-intensive, this industry has a lot of potential for employment generation at various levels! It is helpful in making self-reliance especially with the use of the free time of women!

This gives farmers sufficient income! Mulberry is also known as Morus alva! It is mainly cultivated for silkworms! A lot of medicines are also made from mulberry! For example- blood tonic, dizziness, constipation, treatment of tinnitus, etc. is used in the treatment! Its juice is most commonly used in Korea, Japan and China! It is an evergreen tree with an average height of 40-60 feet! In India, it is cultivated in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

How to make silk?

The silkworm, in its pupa state, forms a silk thread around the body and closes itself between the threads, called Koya! Thus silk yarn is obtained from “Silk Farming”! Silkworm thread is protein while cotton and jute yarn is made of cellulose. Rearing of silkworms for making raw silk is called silk production or ‘silkworm’! Silk was first practised in China in the world! China ranks first in the world in natural silk production, followed by India! Every species of silk is produced in India!

Eri Silk Development and Extension Program

A program for employment generation was started in the state through castor plant-based silk! Eri silkworms are reared on castor leaves and produced in silk! Castor plant can be planted on less fertile land and it requires less irrigation! Along with silk pest rearing on castor plant, farmers get additional income from the sale of castor seeds and root of castor plant as castor seeds help in oil production and root drug production!

Silk farming irrigation

Due to natural rainfall in the plantation done during the monsoon period, the agricultural cost is reduced by the plantation done in the autumn! Even if there is no rain for 15-20 days during the rainy season, it is necessary to irrigate the plantation with agriculture! Irrigation must be arranged between the month of May! At this time, depending on the type of land, irrigation is necessary within 15-20 days.

Land Preparation –

Preparation of land is started before the monsoon rains for the planting of mulberry, the farmer brothers! With the help of indigenous plough or rotavator, the land is 30-35 cm long. Do deep ploughing as well as rotten manure of 8 MT of cow dung at the rate of per acre is added to the land! If there is a possibility of termite infestation in the land, about 100 kg of BHC along with cow dung manure. Powders should be mixed with soil to prevent 20 percent aldrin 5 percent termites!

Use

Used in making agricultural machinery, sports goods, furniture! It is also cultivated for raising silkworms and fruits. Silk Farming is obtained from the branches and baskets are made from them. Firewood is also used as wood and fodder!
