Renault And Nissan India
The employees of Renault Nissan India Chennai plant have announced not to come to work from 26 May. These employees have said that until the safety of COVID-19 is not ensured in the plant, they will not come to work. Regarding this, the Renault Nissan Workers Union has given notice to the company management in a letter of its joint secretary T. Tamiz Kumaran today.
He cited the Madras High Court order that steps should be taken to reduce footfall in the office and factory. The union said that the company has not taken any steps to reduce the footfall in the company’s plant to prevent the spread of the corono virus. Renault Nissan Automotive is a joint venture car production plant of French auto major Renault and Japan’s Nissan Motor Company. Kumaran also said in his letter that the company management does not consult the employees union in any matter and has been taking unilateral decisions and wants to use the union as its loudspeaker.
Five employees died
Union president K. Balaji Krishnan said, “Since last year, five workers have died in Renault Nissan Automotive and about 850 have been infected with the Corona virus.” He also said that COVID-19 test positive of about 420 employees has come up in 2021 alone.
Krishnan said, “All our employees are young and they are dying. No social distance has been kept in the factory. We suggested reducing the number of cars produced per hour. This will reduce the number of workers per work center. But the management disagrees. “
The Renault Nissan automotive plant employs about 8,580 employees including 3,580 permanent employees, 2000 staff, 2000 contract workers and 1000 apprentices. If one takes into account the family members of the workers and those working in the vendor companies, then the total number of at-risk persons will be two lakhs. According to Krishnan, the union had requested to keep the factory closed till the demand for vaccinations of workers or beds in hospitals was reduced.
Although the automobile and component manufacturers did not work during the March 2020 lockdown, they are allowed to work with the state government and have been brought under continuous process industries.
COVID-19 cover policy of only 1 lakh in the name of security
Krishnan said the Tamil Nadu government’s order to classify automobile manufacturers as a public utility service expired this February. According to him, Renault Nissan Automotive has taken an insurance policy covering COVID-19 for a value of Rs 1,00,000 per employee and not for their dependents.
Krishnan said, “There is a general health insurance cover of Rs 2,00,000 for the workers and their dependents, but the coverage is inadequate as the hospital expenses for the COVID-19 are very high.” The union has filed a case against the Tamil Nadu government and Renault Nissan Automotive in the Madras High Court, challenging the earlier order, which categorizes units with frequent process industries.
