German carmaker Volkswagen India is not in the mood to discontinue its popular hatchback model Polo in the country. Recently, the carmaker indicated that the new-generation Polo models, which are currently under-development, could be launched in the Indian market in 2023.
During a recent Volkswagen event, Ashish Gupta, the car director’s brand director in India, said that the German auto giant is still evaluating the possibility of a seventh-generation Polo hatchback for the Indian market. The Polo hatchback is easily the most popular offering from Volkswagen in India and is currently the top selling model, having sold 15,085 units last month. Volkswagen Ameo is the second best selling model of Carmaker in India with a sale of 4,729 units.
Volkswagen is all set to bring a special mat editions of the Polo hatchback to the Indian market. The brand showcased the new Polo during a recent media event where it also showcased its new SUV – the Taigun and Tiguan facelift.
- The Volkswagen Polo Matte Edition will continue to be powered on the BS6 1.0-liter three-cylinder, turbocharged FSI engine.
- Relative to the 6-speed manual transmission, the engine is capable of generating 108 Bhp of power and 175 Nm of peak torque. The design and other specifications of the Matte Edition Polo are the same as the current model.
- Volkswagen currently offers the Polo hatchback in India with two engine options. One is a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 75PS power and 95Nm torque and another 1.0-liter turbo-petrol motor produces 110PS power and 175Nm torque.
- The car is priced between 6.01 lakh and 9.92 lakh (ex-showroom). The Polo is currently available in four variants – Trendline, Comfortline, Highline Plus and GT.
- In this hatchback segment, the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Tata Ultros and Honda Jazz are rivals.
The 6th generation Volkswagen Polo model is based on the MQB A0 platform. According to reports, the seventh generation models are going to be based on the local MQB A0 IN platform. Polo hatchbacks sold outside India have a length of over four meters.
