Industrialist Anand Mahindra is thinking of opening a medical college in the country. For this, he has asked Tech Mahindra’s Managing Director and CEO CP Gurnani to consider the plan related to it and work on it.
Anand Mahindra said in a tweet on Thursday, “I was not aware that there was such a problem of medical colleges in the country. CP Gurnani, can we consider opening an institute of medical education on the campus of Mahindra University? “
This tweet of Anand Mahindra has come at a time when thousands of Indian medical students are stranded in Ukraine and the Government of India has started ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring them safely from there.
According to media reports, thousands of Indian students go abroad for medical studies every year due to the low number of medical colleges and expensive fees in private medical colleges. According to one figure, there are about 18,000 Indian medical students in Ukraine alone. Apart from this, about 16,000 Indian students in Russia and about 23,000 in China are currently studying medicine.

According to the National Medical Commission, there are about 605 medical colleges in the country, in which there are about 90,825 MBBS seats. Last year in 2021, about 16 lakh students had appeared in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to these seats. This means that about 97 percent of the children who want to study medicine do not get admission in the country.
This is the reason why students have to look towards countries like Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, China, Georgia, Armenia and Philippines for medical studies. Medical education in these countries is good as well as cheap as compared to private colleges in India.
When Anand Mahindra tweeted on Thursday about opening a medical college, a user also drew his attention towards the fees. The user wrote, “It is a good step to open a medical college, but its fees should not be in crores like other institutions.” On this, Anand Mahindra said that attention will be given to this fact.
