The Indian-origin president of the British Association of Physicians has called on the government to allow some mandatory safeguards to remain in place to fight against COVID-19 when lockdown restrictions are eased later this month. The progress made in the war should not be ‘wasted’. Dr Chand Nagpaul, head of the council of the British Medical Association (BMA), a leading body of doctors, has warned that corona virus infection with the delta form of COVID-19 is increasing at an ‘alarming rate’.
The organization believes that the rules of wearing masks in closed public places including public transport, shops and health centers and maintaining physical distance for people who gather in well ventilated places should remain in force even after 19 July. This is the date on which all valid lockdown restrictions in England are believed to be abolished.
18 months of hard work should not be wasted
He said that we have made excellent progress in the last 18 months through the vaccination campaign and individual care of the people across the country and the government should not let it go to waste at this critical juncture. Dr Nagpaul said that it is not a binary decision of ‘all or nothing’.
He said that the sensible, cautious measures we are proposing will not only reduce the impact of rising cases on the personal health and healthcare of the people, but also the future waves, new patterns and lockdowns which will affect the economy and society. It will also reduce the extensive damage caused.
74 percent cases increase in seven days
The BMA noted that weekly cases in England have increased by 74 percent from the previous seven days, while the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 has increased by 55 percent in the last week. On the other hand, South African experts have said that the anti-COVID-19 vaccines of American companies Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) being used in South Africa are more effective on the delta form than the beta form of the corona virus.
J&J’s vaccine is more effective on Delta than Beta
South Africa’s Acting Health Minister Mamamoloko Kubayi told a press conference on Friday that experts say that based on both laboratory research and field studies, it has been found that these vaccines are effective on the delta form of the virus. Professor Glenda Gray, President and CEO of the South African Medical Research Council, said that we have found that the J&J vaccine works better on the delta form and as far as the delta and beta forms are concerned, it is more effective on the delta than the beta form. is more effective.
