biodiesel
After a long wait of more than seven years, Kerala Veterinary Doctor John Abraham finally got the patent for making Biodiesel from Chicken Waste. This fuel gives an average of more than 38 kilometers in a liter and its cost is about 40 percent of the current price of diesel and it also reduces pollution.
Abraham, Associate Professor at the Veterinary College under the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, said that he was granted the patent by the Indian Patent Office on July 7, 2021, after a long wait of seven and a half years. Abraham invented biodiesel from the oil extracted from the waste of chickens that were slaughtered. He said that he invented this during 2009-12. He completed his research under the guidance of late Professor Ramesh Shravankumar.
Plant built at a cost of Rs 18 lakh
After research, Abraham set up an experimental plant at Pokode Veterinary College near Kalpetta in Wayanad in 2014 at a cost of Rs 18 lakh. For this he has got funding from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Subsequently, Bharat Petroleum’s Kochi-based refinery gave a quality certificate to Abraham’s biodiesel in April 2015 and since then one vehicle in the college is running on the same fuel.
Production of 1 liter of biodiesel from 100 kg chicken waste
When asked why he uses only poultry waste for fuel, Abraham said that birds and pigs have a lot of fat saturation in their stomachs and because of this it is easier to extract oil from them at normal temperature. Abraham and his students are now working on a project to make biodiesel from pig waste.
He also said that one liter of biodiesel can be produced from 100 kg of poultry waste from butcher houses.
Petrol and diesel prices cross Rs 100
Let us tell you that the prices of petrol and diesel in India are at their record high. Petrol is being priced at Rs 100 per liter in 17 states and union territories. In the month of July, oil companies have increased petrol prices 9 times and diesel prices 5 times.
