Domestic vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors has decided to close its manufacturing facility in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand from today. The company will keep the various departments of its oldest and largest plant in Jamshedpur closed for five days and during this period the annual maintenance and repair work will be completed.
In a letter sent to its employees on Monday, the company said that the factory will remain closed from May 18 to May 22. Employees have been asked to come to work on 24 May. This announcement was made before the meeting of the company’s board of directors on 18 May. The Board of Directors is meeting to consider and approve the financial results for the quarter ended March 31, 2021 and the financial year 2020-21.
In internal talks, the company said, “It has been decided to close some of the departments of the Jamshedpur factory from Tuesday 18 May 2021 to Saturday 2 May 2021”. A Tata Motors spokesperson has also confirmed the closure of the factory. And it is said that this is for annual maintenance work which happens regularly.
Plant closed due to pandemic
According to the spokesperson, this step has also been taken in support of the state-wise ‘lockdown’ to control the corona epidemic. RK Singh, general secretary of the Tata Motors Workers Union, Jamshedpur, said that the production of commercial vehicles has declined due to the COVID-19 epidemic at the factory. The reason for this is that almost 50 percent of the buses come from around 9,000 employees and at this time till May 27, the state is not running buses due to ‘lockdown’.
What will happen to the affected employees
The internal letter states that the employees affected by the closure of the factory can take casual or ‘leave’ leave for half a period. They will get normal salary for the remaining period. According to the company, a separate notice will be issued for those employees who need to serve in their respective department or unit during this time. The company’s Jamshedpur factory manufactures heavy commercial vehicles.
