India’s largest car brand Maruti Suzuki is one of the car manufacturers that has chosen a pro-petrol strategy.
Maruti Suzuki announced a few years ago that it would focus only on petrol, hybrid and electric cars and later discontinued the diesel variants. However, it seems that homegrown automaker Tata Motors took advantage of Maruti Suzuki’s decision to discontinue the diesel model very soon. Know how…
It is evident that the buyers of Indian passenger vehicles currently show interest in petrol cars, whereas earlier their choice was different. Even a few years ago, passenger vehicle buyers were inclined towards diesel cars. During 2012, diesel cars contributed 60% of total passenger vehicle sales, resulting in automobile brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata Motors, Honda etc. investing heavily in diesel technology.
Now, over time, customers’ preferences have changed. Vehicle manufacturers are also focusing on bringing petrol cars instead of diesel models with anti-diesel and strong emission standard norms. In 2020, petrol cars accounted for more than 82% of total personal vehicle sales, while diesel models accounted for about 16% of sales. The remaining percentage was shared by CNG, electric vehicles etc.
In such a situation, Maruti Suzuki shifted focus from diesel cars, but Tata Motors also remained in this area (Tata Diesel Car) and earned hugely.
Sales well in Corona epidemic
Tata Motors decided to keep the diesel engine model continuous. As a result, even in FY2021, when the coronavirus epidemic devastated the automobile industry, Tata Motors sales of personal vehicles have been steady. Apart from launching new models like Nexon, Tiago, Tigor, Ultros, Harrier and Safari, the diesel variants of these cars also helped the automaker improve sales.
Major share of diesel vehicles included in the sale
Back in FY2013, Tata Motors registered 2,22,212 units of PV sales, while the vehicle manufacturer sold 2,22,011 units in the last financial year, of which 16% was the diesel model. Last time, it set a record sales of 2 lakh units before the COVID epidemic in FY 2019.
The four models sold by Tata Motors along with the diesel variants – the Altrose, Nexon, Harrier and Safari. In the last financial year, a total of 143,021 units were sold, contributing 28.45% of the total volume by diesel models.
The auto company claimed that it had recorded the eight-year highest number on the basis of strong consumer demand. The automaker also claimed that the new range of cars has almost doubled the sales of the car brand at the rate of over 20,000 units sold every month. Apart from the new range of cars, Tata Motors also credits the diesel model for this sales performance.
