Royal Enfield, the world’s largest motorbike market and India’s famous brand, will close its three manufacturing plants from May 27 to May 29, according to an internal note for workers. “We will resume operations from Monday, 31 May,” the internal note signed by Royal Enfield’s Chief Operating Officer B Govindarajan said.

B Govindarajan said in the note, “The above days will be repaid later as per the needs of the market.” Royal Enfield did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. The three plants are located in and around Chennai in the southern Tamil Nadu state, often referred to as the Detroit of India. The automaker closed its plants for three days from May 13 to May 15 earlier this month.
Corona cases are much higher in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu is one of the most affected states with more than 30,000 corona cases a day in the past week. The auto hub state, known as the Detroit of auto manufacturing centers in India, has imposed a lockdown until May 31 but has allowed some factories, including auto plants, to continue operations.
Hyundai also closed the plant in Tamil Nadu
Before this, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has decided to temporarily suspend operations at its plant in Tamil Nadu by 29 May 2021. The decision comes at a time when the Korean carmaker is planning to launch its first three-row SUV Alcazar in India next month. This may affect the production of the new 7-seater SUV.
