Don’t worry if you are a Duster fan too. Renault will bring back the Duster later in the future. Currently, the Duster is not selling well as it is one of the oldest cars in the segment.
Renault Duster can be discontinued anytime in India
The Renault Duster has a distinct fan following behind it due to its rough and ride quality. But now the manufacturer is now planning to discontinue the existing Duster. Renault has already informed its component suppliers that they will stop production of the Duster in October 2021. The Duster is currently manufactured at the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant located in Oragadam. Renault says that they are removing SUVs from their portfolio to increase profits and reduce costs.
However, if you are also a Duster fan, don’t worry. Renault will bring back the Duster later in the future. They will bring the new generation of Duster which has been around for a long time for the Indian market. The last update for the Duster was when the BS6 emission norms came into force. Renault discontinued the beloved diesel engine and was replaced by a new turbocharged petrol engine with a capacity of 1.3-litres. The engine produces 156 PS of maximum power and 254 Nm of peak torque.
The second generation of Duster is already on sale in Europe. The Duster was the first SUV to actually drive the sales of compact SUVs in India. However, now the sales of the Duster are not good as it is one of the oldest cars in the segment. The manufacturer has tried to update a few things but it was not enough as the overall design still does not look trendy. Another thing that killed the sales was that Renault discontinued the all-wheel-drive variant of the Duster. It was the only SUV in the segment to be offered with an all-wheel-drive powertrain. Now, after the departure of the AWD variant, people could not justify buying the current Duster.
New generation Duster will be back
Renault is yet to reveal the timeline for the new generation of Duster, but we expect it to happen sometime next year. The new Duster is more modern and smart in appearance. Renault tried to update the exterior of the current Duster with LED daytime running lamps, revised bumpers and a new paint scheme, but it was the interior that started showing its age.
The second generation Duster is more elegant and SUV looking due to its styling. It has Y-shaped elements. The front headlamps and rear tail lamps get Y-shaped LED daytime running lamps. There are new and more aggressive bumpers with huge faux skid plates. There is some chunky plastic cladding which gives an off-road look. However, the overall profile of the SUV still remains the same as the current Duster.
Unfortunately, the interior looks very similar to the current one. So, there are circular AC vents and a dual-tone up-right dashboard. Having said that, Renault is using new materials for the interior which can make the interior feel like an up-market place as compared to the existing Duster.
