This is the first official response from Renault-Nissan, which has been facing protests from workers for the past few days, after the Madras High Court decided to inspect the facility and order it.
The High Court had to step in when workers complained that COVID-19 protocols such as social distancing were not followed, even asking them to work during the statewide lockdown. Gone. On Monday, the Madras High Court had asked the Tamil Nadu government to send senior officials at the Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) plant to examine whether the COVID protocols were being followed during working hours.
The French-Japanese carmaker has assured full cooperation during an inspection ordered by the High Court. The company released a statement late at night, stating, “Nissan welcomes the court’s decision and the positive outcome of the joint inspection of our plant with RNITS; We look forward to cooperating with the state government of Tamil Nadu during this time. Investigations are planned for tomorrow. “
The court’s order came after a reaction from the labor union, the Renault Nissan India Thozhilalar Sangam (RNITS), had filed a public interest litigation challenging the order issued by the state revenue and disaster management, which required the company to comply with certain protocol conditions. Permission was given to start work in the under factory.
Plant is closed for almost a week
Significantly, the Renault-Nissan plant has been closed since Wednesday after protests by workers demanding better health facilities and improved working conditions amid the COVID-19 crisis. The facility was scheduled to resume operations on Monday. However, many workers decided to remain closed after the labor union sent a letter to the management, stating that it was not safe for the workers to report at work. According to insiders, the union had suggested that the facility should be operated with limited man power.
Nissan said in a statement, “We are delighted to welcome 3,000 employees today to finalize preparations for a phasewise and gradual reopening of machining production for post-sales and exports. . ” It added that the company continues to promote the safety, well-being of employees at its operating centers and will continue to take additional measures to ensure a safe environment.
