Plans to build 270 km long tunnel
The Minister of Road Transport and Highways said, “India has some of the toughest hilly areas in the world, so India chose to build the tunnels and reduce the cost of constructing the tunnel with a minimum construction period without compromising safety.” Gadkari said that his ministry is planning to construct a 270-km-long tunnel based on the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Our national highway has a length of 1.37 lakh km and it carries 40 percent of the traffic. The government is hopeful that the freight traffic will now increase beyond 40 percent on 70-80 national highways.
The latest technology in the construction of tunnels needed
He said, “On the national highways in India, the total length of the tunnel is 31 km and the operation is 106 km”. Gadkari said that modern technology needs to be implemented in the construction of tunnels. He said, “Without compromising on safety, we need to reduce the capital cost of building tunnels using successful methods, which are already available in the world.”
The Union Minister said that he is raising capital from the market to reduce the cost of projects. He said that revenue can be increased by developing smart cities, roadways facilities and other facilities near tunnels. Gadkari emphasized ways to build tunnels under rivers and under the sea using pre-cast technology.
