After the prices of diesel-petrol are almost equal, the demand for diesel vehicles in the auto sector has come down, meanwhile some companies have stopped production of diesel variants of their vehicles. However, Maruti Suzuki India is reportedly set to reintroduce diesel engines in its portfolio in 2022. According to a recent report by The Hindu Business Line, the Indo-Japanese automaker is planning to launch a new 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is likely to be offered with the Maruti Suzuki XL6 first.
Thereafter, the company is expected to introduce it for the Vitara Brezza, Ertiga and Ciaz. The company is said to have been working on the new diesel engine for over a year at its powertrain factory in Manesar, Haryana. The report states that the XL6 is expected to get the engine first, after which the company is planning to add it to the Vitara Brezza line-up. In fact, the Vitara Brezza will be launched with a diesel engine at the Auto Expo in February 2022. is likely to. After this, the Ertiga MPV and the Ciaz sedan are also likely to get diesel engines.
Why was the 1.5-litre diesel engine not introduced earlier?
However, when all these possibilities were discussed with Maruti Suzuki India, the company spokesperson said, “We do not comment on the future of the products”. Please note that this is not a new diesel engine. In 2018, the company introduced the 1.5-litre DDiS 225 diesel engine for the Ciaz and Ertiga, which was developed in-house by Suzuki. But later, the company phase-wise discontinued the diesel engines in April 2020 stating that the investment involved in converting a BS4 engine to BS6 is much higher than that of petrol and is not a viable option for the company, especially for small businesses. for cars.
The company’s chairman at that time, RC Bhargava, has said that depending on the market situation, the company may consider converting to a larger 1.5-lite unit in future. As of now, it is not expected that small cars like Baleno, DZire or anything below that will get a diesel option.
Unlike Maruti Suzuki India, rivals Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata Motors, and new entrant Kia continue to sell diesel vehicles in India and have registered huge demand in this segment. In fact, recently Hyundai had said that the distribution between the bookings for the petrol and diesel models of the new Alcazar is almost equal. Hence, it is possible that this constant demand for diesel vehicles may have prompted Maruti Suzuki to reintroduce the engine in India.
