Hit and run road accidents: During the year 2019, 536 people were killed and 1,655 people were injured in ‘hit and run’ road accidents in Delhi. The ministry has also sought comments from stakeholders for this proposed scheme in 30 days.

The government has proposed to increase the compensation amount from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh for the families of those killed in hit and run road accidents. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a scheme to increase the amount of compensation for hit and run road accident victims. In which a compensation of Rs 50,000 has been proposed for those seriously injured in road accidents. According to official figures, 1,51,113 people died in a total of 4,49,002 road accidents in the country during the year 2019.

The ministry said in an official statement, there is a need to change the scheme for compensation of hit and run accident victims. From Rs.12,500 to Rs.50,000 for grievous injury and from Rs.25,000 to Rs.2,00,000 for death. This scheme will be implemented in place of the compensation scheme (Solatium Scheme, 1989) made in 1989.
Motor Vehicle Accident Fund to be formed
Under the draft scheme, the ministry has proposed the process for detailed investigation of road accidents, Detailed Accident Report (DAR) and its reporting as well as time frame for various stakeholders for speedy settlement of claims.
