MG Motor India has decided to close its facility in Halol, Gujarat, amid increasing cases of COVID-19 across the country. The carmaker has today confirmed that the plant will be closed for at least seven days, starting on April 29 and which will run till May 5. MG Motor India Chairman and Managing Director Rajiv Chaba has confirmed that the carmaker is taking this decision in an attempt to ‘break the chain of COVID’.
Chaba wrote, “We have decided to close our plant in Halol for 7 days to break the chain of COVID where our employees are committed to being safe and taking care of the community in these harsh times.
Plan to invest 1500 crore rupees
MG Motor manufactures its popular in India – Hector, Hector Plus, Gloster and ZS EV from this plant. The carmaker had planned to invest 1,500 crore to provide localization along with meeting the increasing demand. Let me tell you, MG had taken the facility from General Motors, which decided to stop using the facility in 2017. Currently, the facility has a capacity to produce around 80,000 vehicles every year.
The company recently announced that it has joined hands with Moksi-based Devanandan Gases to help mitigate the crisis faced across the country and to increase production of medical oxygen. MG had also announced that it would provide vaccination for its employees working in the facility.
MG Motor became the third carmaker in less than a week to decide to close the plant amid growing COVID-19 cases. Recently, Hero MotoCorp and Toyota Kirloskar Motor also made similar announcements amid the ongoing crisis.
