Mercedes-Benz sold 5,90,999 passenger cars in the first quarter of 2021 due to strong demand for plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles, along with China and US retail sales. This is a 22.3 percent jump in sales globally compared to the same period last year.
In Europe, the XEV was one of four cars sold by Mercedes-Benz and Smart. Globally, plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars made up about 10 percent of total sales, with sales of approximately 59,000 units followed by more than 16,000 electric vehicles. EQA has also received good response after its launch in January this year. The company already has 20,000 orders for EQA. Given the strong start, the company is looking to bring 3 new models EQS, EQB and EQE this year.
The current worldwide supply shortage in some semiconductor components affects sales in the first quarter and will continue to affect Q2 model sales. The company has been closely monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with the suppliers.
Mercedes-Benz sales in the Asia-Pacific grew 46.6 percent due to continued strong growth in China: where a new record was achieved with sales of 2,22,520 cars delivered in Q1. In January, sales in China reached a critical milestone with sales of 100,000 vehicles within about a month. In the Europe region, delivery of the brand was slightly above Q1 2020, despite measures of lockdown in many markets at the beginning of the year. In Germany, Mercedes-Benz recorded a 15.4 percent decrease in total 54,446 car sales while 88,318 units in the North America region showed a strong growth of 12.5 percent.
In India, the company reported a 34 percent growth from January 2020 and February sales to Q1 2020 which remained at pre-COVID levels.
