According to a survey conducted by consultancy firm EY, sales of electric vehicles are expected to increase globally within the next year, with almost 90 percent of Indian consumers willing to buy battery-powered vehicles for a premium amount. The survey, which covered over 9,000 citizens of 13 countries, including 1,000 citizens of India. They also found that 40 per cent of the customers were ready to pay a premium of up to 20 per cent. Among Indian car buyers, three out of 10 people said they would prefer to buy an electric or hydrogen vehicle.
Most of the respondents in India also said that they expect a driving range of 100 to 200 miles from a fully charged electric vehicle. The survey also found that almost 90 percent of consumers in India are willing to pay a premium to buy an EV. “Consumers are willing to pay extra for the added value of being environmentally responsible,” said Vinay Raghunath, EY India Partner and Automotive Sector Leader.
Another finding is that current and future EV owners prefer to use digital channels to buy cars, a higher percentage than existing and future combustion engine car owners. The survey also said that environmental concern is the top reason for buying an EV, with 97 percent of the respondents saying that the COVID-19 pandemic has raised awareness and concerns about environmental issues.
About 67 percent of people who want to buy an EV also feel that it is their responsibility to reduce their personal environmental impact while 69 percent believe that buying an EV is one way to achieve this goal.
