With the increase in traffic on the highways after the relaxation of the lockdown in many states, the toll collection through FASTag has reached the level recorded before the second wave of COVID. With a transaction of Rs 63.09 lakh as on July 1, 2021, the toll collection through FASTag has reached Rs 103.54 crore across the country. Electronic toll collection through FASTag is being operated at 780 active toll plazas across the country.
Toll collection in June 2021 increased to Rs 2,576.28 crore which is almost 21 percent more than Rs 2,125.16 crore collected in May 2021. With around 34.80 million users, FASTag is being used up to 96 per cent across the country and 99 per cent across many toll plazas. According to an estimate, FASTag will save about Rs 20,000 crore on fuel per annum, which will save precious foreign exchange and will also help the environment. With the adoption of FASTag by highway users and its continued growth, the waiting time at all National Highway fee plazas has come down significantly.
Let us tell you that in May, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued new guidelines for toll plazas to reduce the waiting time of vehicles at toll points across the country. It states that each vehicle should be serviced within 10 seconds. This time limit should be adopted even during peak hours of vehicular pressure on the highway so that vehicles have to wait in the queue for minimum time.
Along with this, NHAI had also said that in the new instructions, smooth flow of traffic will also be ensured to ensure that vehicles do not queue more than 100 meters at toll plazas. In such a situation, if the queue is more than 100 meters, then in that case all the vehicles will be allowed without paying toll till the queue of vehicles is back to 100 meters from the toll block.
NHAI had said that a yellow line would be drawn at all toll points to mark the distance of 100 meters. The move is to instill another sense of accountability among the toll plaza operators.
