According to the Delhi government, electric vehicles have overtaken CNG and diesel vehicles in the last quarter in terms of sales. EVs accounted for 9.2 per cent of the total vehicles sold in Delhi between September and November 2021, as against the national average of 1.6 per cent of EV sales. A total of 9,540 electric vehicles were sold in Delhi in the last quarter.
The Delhi government has also claimed that the sale of electric vehicles is increasing rapidly every month. It is worth noting that the Delhi government has set a target of bringing 25 percent of the total vehicle sales in the capital to EVs by the year 2024.
Looking at the latest figures, between September and November, 82,626 units of petrol vehicles were registered in Delhi. This was followed by the number of electric vehicles, whose 9,540 units were registered. Talking about diesel and CNG vehicles, a total of 7,820 diesel and 2,688 CNG vehicles were registered. In this way, in terms of sales, electric vehicles are second only to petrol vehicles.
Of these 9,540 electric vehicles, 2,873 EVs were sold in September. 3,275 EVs were sold in October, while 3,392 EVs were sold in November. Experts believe that the Delhi government’s EV policy has helped in increasing the sale of electric vehicles in the capital. Under this, the purchase of EV is exempted from road tax and registration fee.
The Delhi government had introduced the EV policy last year and Delhi was the first state to give exemption in road tax and registration fee. The government also gave subsidy to the people on the purchase of EV, which ranged from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh.
